In my Video Poker Master class presentations, all you need to do is WATCH AND LEARN! There will be no homework; there are no tests, and all you will have to “pay” is to pay attention! I do suggest that you pause the video often if something is not clear to you, and multiple viewings are also highly recommended. Repetition will help you to retain what you have learned. Also, please keep in mind that I am very diligent about answering all questions. So, if something has you stumped, feel free to ask me any questions you may have in the “comments” section below.
The featured game of this video series is Full Pay 9/6 Jacks or Better. This game is very popular, especially among novice players, for its strategy is rather simple and intuitive, while its pay table does not have a large portion of the EV tied up in the rare and much more difficult to hit 4 of a KInd “bonus.” hands All of this promises a much more pleasant experience for the less experienced players: they will lose…almost without fail, but their money is *much* more likely to last longer.
This video presentation is from a 150-hand session of Full Pay 8Jacks or Better Bonus plus Video Poker. In my videos I do not “cherry-pick” hands deciding for you what you will see and not see; you will observe the entire session exactly as it was dealt and played. And unlike almost all other Video Poker vloggers, all episodes of my Video Poker Master class (starting around episode 27) will be played with perfect expert strategy thus GUARANTEEING that what you are learning will produce the highest EV possible. You can be certain by watching that you are indeed learning the correct strategy for whatever game is being played. When and if I do make a rare mistake on video, I can assure you that it will be relatively insignificant, and I will bring your attention to it as well.
With only a few exceptions, you cannot just walk up to any Video Poker machine and expect to win. The VAST majority of games are losers, and if a play has under a 100% EV it does not matter if you play “perfectly” or not, you will still lose in the long run. Winning is not only about using expert strategy; winning is about finding the right “play” which is a combination of machine EV and casino promotions. While taking advantage of some generous casino promotion, taking a game that is a “small” loser such as 9/6 Jacks or Better (99.5%), triple Bonus plus (99.8%), Bonus Deuces Wild (99.4%), or 16/10 NSU Deuces Wild (99.7%) and turning it into a winning proposition is certainly possible, thus seeking out these promotions can be well worth it.
BEWARE: “short pay” versions of Full Pay (9/6) Jacks or Better abound! They are MUCH more common than the Full Pay versions. For example, you will often find JOB machines that have the exact same pay table as a Full Pay variant EXCEPT that it pays 5 for 1 for a Flush rather than 6 for 1. That sounds innocent enough, right? Eh…not so much! That one “little” variant will likely make for a significant difference in your results; your EV has now dropped all the way down below 98.4%. Yikes!
And even if you are successful in finding the so-called “Full Pay” version, your job is far from done. If you actually want to turn this game into a winning play, you’re going to need a lot of help from a casino promotion. But with a little bit of research, sometimes that is quite plausible. For example, some casinos have been known to offer an extra $1000 for hitting a quarter Royal while playing on your club card. I simulated that exact promotion in my 5th episode in the video series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNigovpqFOQ. Any casino that is willing to offer that promotion is not likely to offer any pay tables that are better, so 9/6 is likely to be the game you end up playing. I have also seen a casino have that very promotion but disqualified 9/6 Jacks or Better specifically. So it should be obvious: when you’re playing for *any* promotion always know all the rules and be sure to read the fine print!
The moral of the story? VERIFY first so that you always KNOW what you are playing for!
Here is the paytable that you are looking for; the pay table (in coins) on a standard 5-coin max Full Pay 9/6 Jacks or Better video poker machine is as follows:
ROYAL FLUSH: 4000
STRAIGHT FLUSH: 250
FOUR OF A KIND: 125
FULL HOUSE: 45
THREE OF A KIND: 15
TWO PAIR: 10
JACKS OR BETTER: 5
Know your pay table differences that may appear to be trivially small can cause catastrophic differences to your EV!
